Home Review
We can assist you in reviewing your loved ones home to ensure the environment they are living in is safe and risk of accident is minimised. This can be particuarly helpful when the person's physical or mental capacity has changed, either gradually or suddenly, and as a result they are at a higher risk. Examples of situations where a home review would be beneficial include (but are not limited to):
- A new dementia diagnosis or a progression in symptoms.
- Stroke.
- Post surgery.
- Increased difficulty in day to day activities due to diagnosis.
- New home environment.
A home review includes assessing the home environment, including the front and back yard, and how the individual interacts with that environment (i.e. using the shower, toilet, bed, lounge etc.). Ensuring a safe and appropriate home environment is a key factor in successful continued aging in place.
Activity Review
Activity reviews involve running through all of the person's day-to-day activities and assessing them for safety, competence and suggesting adjustments which may make the activities easier or safer. During the review we will visually assess each activity which removes any bias a descriptive assessment may hold. An activity review can be useful at any point where physical or mental ability may have deteriorated. Examples of when an activity review may be beneficial include (but again, are not limited to):
- A new dementia diagnosis or a progression in symptoms.
- Stroke.
- Post surgery.
- Increased difficulty in day to day activities due to diagnosis.
- Changes in ability since last activity review from Occupational Therapist.
An activity review includes assessing general day-to-day activities, including special interests and hobbies, and recommending modifications or adjustments that may make the activities safer or easier to complete. Community access can also be included in an activity review. This may include using public transport, shopping or going to public places.
Ongoing Therapy
Following a home review or activity review, ongoing therapy may be recommended to assist with achieving goals set by the client. Examples of this might include:
- Activity practice to improve competence and ability.
- Community access practice to increase safety.
- Home modifications.
- Relearning skills related to achieving client goals.
